On a calm, cloudless December day in 2006, coconut palms, shade umbrellas and guest reclining lounges stretch along the ocean side edge of one of the swimming pools at the Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, managed by Hilton.
There are a number of similar pools in the first stage of the resort, which opened in mid-2006. The pools are lined with areas of dark and lighter blue mosaic tiles, giving a sparkling lapis quality to the water. Rectangular adjacent pools are constructed on varying levels, to give a sculptural yet linear quality to the bathing pools complex. They surround the central restaurant facility - Nuku Restaurant - on three sides (the beach and ocean is on the fourth side) and provide a tranquil, cool surrounding. One of the pools has an horizon edge, the water pouring into a lower pool in a horizontal waterfall.
The sun umbrellas and lounges are upholstered in soothing grey, adding a stylish ambience to the pools.
